Continuation of 'Stressed Out Santa'.
On with the show!
Before we start again...make sure that you have moved everything into their rightful position...changed or edited any shapes, as directed on the first page, before we start the next procedure...if you are anything like me, I always go back again and change things....which you can do with VECTORS....not such a dirty word, huh? *g*
Step 1* Okay...well I started from the bottom of the layer menu...which were the boots...Convert to Raster Layer...grab the 'Lighten RGB' tool and use it on those boots...settings 5-20-100-20-50...what we need to achieve is boots full of snow! *s*
Save !
Step 2 * Next his head...Convert to Raster Layer....OUCH! Add a slight texture on him if you wish...then make your foreground colour a dark shade of red. Grab the Retouch tool
...choose 'Colour to Target'...which is the very last one on that menu...I used these settings: 5-20-50-20-50 now give him two rosy cheeks. Still with the retouch tool, select 'smudge' 3-50-70-1-100 and very carefully blend into the face...moving up and out. Lastly select 'Lightness Down' in the same menu and dab around a little. Well you know how the cheeks get when they are icy cold! *s*

Save !
Step 3* Next the eyes...Convert to Raster layer...zoom in
so that you can see clearly what you are doing...add a few touches with the 'Lighten RGB'. Do the same for the other eye.
Save !
Step 4* The nose next...Convert to Raster layer...if you added a texture to his face, then use the same one on his nose...Zoom in...and using a combination of retouch tools in the same way as before, 'Lighten RGB'...10-20-20-20-20. 'Lightness Down'...5-0-20-50-20....'Colour to Target' shade it and add the rosy colour...brrr he does look cold. *s* I then added a drop shadow with these settings: Vertical and horizontal 1....Opacity 17....Blur 3.5 Colour...Black.
Save!
Step 5* Now make one of the leg layers active and convert to raster layer. Turn off the board area so that you can see properly. Again use the combination of tools in the same way to make creases...highlighting and shading....until you have a crumpled look....not forgetting of course, the dark shadow areas under the jacket and down the sides of the legs. You can of course achieve this same look by using other tools, such as spray can, inner bevel and so on...but the idea of the tutorial is to show you alternatives...getting acquainted with all your PSP tools instead of thrashing to death the most obvious ones. *g* Once you have the leg finished...do the other one in the same way.
Step 6* Make the hat layer active and turn off all layers above it, except for the hat band...we need this to see where the shadows go.....repeat the same steps as above....convert to raster layer....in the same way as before...make your folds, creases and shadows etc...learn to use both the 'darken RGB' and 'lightness down' tools...there is a difference. I alternate between many of them and therefore can not possibly do screen captures of them all...so it's up to you to experiment. *s*
Step 7* Hat band....convert to raster layer and use the EC 4 Jiggle...... Xmas Doggy...now used for Santa too. *g* (which should now be in your EC 4 Jiggle folder) Follow the same steps for the pom pom.
Save!
Step 8* Turn back on all layers except for the board and string...make the jacket layer active, convert to raster layer. Repeat for shading, highlighting as in steps above.
Save!
Step 9* Now make the jacket band active and convert to raster layer...add the EC 4 Jiggle effect as before. Do this for the two other bands too...when done...reselect the right band and using the darken tool.....6-0-50-20-40 and darken where the two bands meet...giving the effect of overlapping....finish off using the 'soften tool'...if needed.
Save!
Step 10* I skipped a few layers and went straight to the 'cuff' layers, just to get the 'jiggle' out of the way. Do them exactly the same way....he's starting to look real 'cool' now. *s* You may need to 'soften' the edges of all the fur bands...but that is up to you.
Step 11* Now the board! Convert to raster layer. Again use the lighten tool to highlight the edges to give a bevel look....nothing too severe...use the soften brush in some areas and darken in others.
Save!
Step 12* Active string layer and convert to raster....use the darken and lighten tools to give a more realistic look....soften the ends that join onto the board...to give the impression of them going through a hole. Add another layer below the board layer and using the same settings, draw a little knot above and extending down the back of the board.
Save!
Step 13* Now for the beard....Convert to Raster layer...Selections...select all...float...grab the Tube tool
and select the 'Jasc Clouds tube on a scale of 20....fill in the beard with these clouds....then go to Effects...Plugins....EC 4 Fur and use these settings:
![]()
Step 14* Now use the smudge tool to push out the edges to make the beard 'wispy' and the 'soften' brush to....well...'soften' it. *g* Pay particular attention to around the nose and cheek area...blend it in so it looks as though it is really growing from the face. Also fluff out the beard over the cuffs in places too. Now darken slightly the area under the cuffs to create a shadow...soften if necessary so that there are no harsh lines.
Save!
Step 15* Mitts...convert to raster and add a texture if you wish...then use the lighten brush to highlight in places and darken to create creases. Do the same for the other mitt.
Save!
Now turn off layer 1 and merge visible all layers and you are finished to decorate with a background. But don't forget to tube him also. Copy the merged layer and paste as new image...resize if necessary and then export him as a tube. Here's my finished Santa.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and didn't get too stressed out doing it. *s
