I have thought about doing a Penguin tutorial for quite a while, simply because it is a family 'mascot'...my darling hubby has always loved penguins and they are about the only thing that he can draw...or so he says. *s* Over the years he has proudly proclaimed, whenever he was shown anyone else's great creations....' I can draw penguins'... so, Mel, darling, I dedicate this tutorial to you. *HUGS*
How to make a 'Christmas Penguin'.Disclaimer....Please Note**
This tutorial uses vector shapes, shading, though it is not really hard....you will get to save the Penguin as a preset shape as well as a tube. *s* It is assumed that you have a good working knowledge of PSP. This may or may not look like a Penguin to you all but it is from my own head and indeed my version of one....so I hope that you all enjoy making him.
This was put together in just a few hours and has not been tested as yet...there was simply no time to do so...Please email me if you encounter any problems due to my instructions or mistakes, so that I in turn can correct them. I'd love to see your results and don't forget to share any good ideas or additions you may have! *s*
What I used for my Penguin.
PSP 7
download a free trial version.....you won't be sorry...but you will be hooked. *s*
Eye Candy 3 or 4 I used the Jiggle filter for the fur.
Tools you will be needing to do this tutorial are as follows:
Preset Shapes
Object Selector
Draw Tool
Retouch tool
Layer Visibility Toggle
Now to make Christmas Penguin!
Step 1* Open up a transparent image size around 400 x 500 16 million colours (24 bit). Don't forget to save as you go along....name your layers as we finish each one, unless you choose to do otherwise. *s* Save as a PSP file!
Step 2* Foreground Null
Background Black
Step 3* Preset Shapes, Create as vector checked and Antialias checked.
Draw a large oval shape in the center of your canvas. This is for what I will refer to as the 'front wing'.
Object selector, right click on the shape and choose node edit...select all...node type...Cusp...move nodes around until you get something like this shape below.
![]()
Save!
Step 4* Whilst on this layer...right click and duplicate the shape... move it to the bottom of the layer palette...name it 'back wing'.
Go back to the front wing and add a new vector layer...Keeping the same colour and settings.....draw a small circle for the head.
Save!
Step 5* Add a new vector layer. Change the Background from Black to White but keeping the same settings as before, draw another large oval shape...for the tummy. Move the nodes around until you get the shape you want for...my nodes were all Cusp.
Save!
Step 6* Preset Shape ....Ellipse
Antialias...Checked
Create as Vector checked
Background #F2D934
Foreground, Black
Line width 1
Add a new vector layer. Draw a small shape for his cheeks and move the nodes around until you get something like on the right. Not all penguins have this colouring so feel free to leave it off if you wish....I just think it makes it look all the more cuddly. *s*
![]()
this is what we have so far >
Save!
Step 7* Add a new vector layer. Keeping the same settings as above, but changing the background to #F27734, draw a narrow oblong shape for his beak...and in the same way as before, move the nodes until you get the desired shape. Save!
Step 8* With the beak layer highlighted, add a new vector layer. and using the Draw Tool... settings set as on the right...draw a line for the mouth.
*note* when you use the penguin from your preset shapes in the future, you can 'flip' this line for a more severe expression. *g*
Save!
Step 9*
Preset Shape ....Ellipse
Antialias...unchecked
Create as Vector unchecked
Background White
Foreground, Black
Line width 1
With the head layer highlighted, add a new vector layer. Draw a small shape for the eye.
Make the Foreground Null and the Background #F7AD85, draw a smaller shape in the center of the white shape.
Then finally, change the Background again to #5E2F05 and draw a smaller shape for the pupil.
Once you have it the way you want it, use the
Object selector to draw around them and then right click to 'group' them.
Duplicate the eye and move the copy over to the other side of the head...move this layer down below the beak layer.
Save!
Step 10* Add a new Vector layer....with your draw tool same settings as before, except making the size 2...draw that penguin a foot. When you are happy with it...make some lines for the toes. Group the foot and toes together then duplicate this foot. Mirror and place on other side of body.
Your layer palette should look something like this below.
Now we are ready to group the whole thing and save as a Preset Shape.
![]()
Save!
Step 11* Grab the Object selector and draw around the complete image...right click and choose 'Group'.
Step 12* Next go to 'File'...Export....Shape...it is a fair way down the menu but I have made my screen capture shorter to cut down on the size...(just incase you look for it at the top of the menu). *s* A warning window will pop up....read it and make sure that what you have selected is correct and then click OK...you will get another window where you have to put in the name of this shape...OK it.
![]()
Step 13* **Open up a new image and test out this shape before going on to convert the layers to raster...better safe than sorry. *s* So look through your preset shapes until you find it. Make sure that 'Retain Style' and 'Create Vector' are selected...then test it out on the new image.
Once you know that it is safely there...close it up and go back to your original image that you were working on. Again grab the Object Selector then right click your image and choose 'ungroup'...or you can go to Edit and using the Command History....highlight 'group'.... 'undo'....or just use your undo button on your taskbar...which is what I do if there are not too many steps involved.
Step 14* This is where we make sure that the shapes, sizes and order are the way we want them...I made the back wing a slightly different shape. To do this I highlighted that layer and grabbed the Object Selector.....then in the same way as before...moved the nodes around to give a different shape. If you wish to change the colours of any vector shapes...then you highlight the shape...right click on properties and change to a different colour, gradient or pattern...you can also add or take away a foreground colour etc from this area...pretty cool, huh?
Here is what the back wing shape looked like after I changed it.
Okay I have this penguin pretty much how I want it so now I am going to convert the layers to raster and work on it some.
You can finish it any way you like.... make it fluffy...cartoon type...quilted, bevelled...make it a stained glass sun catcher....the choice is up to you.
Don't forget to keep saving!
I decided to make a simply 'fluffy' penguin, for my first one. *s* If you want to do one like this...here is how.
Step 15* Select the foot layer and convert to raster...add a sandstone texture and an inner bevel...with these settings... Size 25 Smoothness 50
Depth 5 Ambience 0
Shininess 0
Light White
Angle 315
Intensity 50
Elevation 30.
Then add a cut out by highlighting the foot layer, adding a new raster layer....Effects...3D Effects....Cut out.... V 2 H -4 Opacity 69 Blur 12 Colour Black. Turn off all layers by clicking on the
in the Layer Palette...leaving only the foot and cut out layers...merged visible. Repeat for the other foot. You can of course omit the cut out for flatter looking feet. *s*
Save!
Step 16* Highlight the back wing layer...Select all...Float....add a new raster layer...then apply the cut out as before...but changing the shadow colour to #C0C0C0. Deselect and turn off all layers except these two and merge visible.
Add the EC 3 Jiggle...settings...9...6...37...Turbulence. Repeat this step for the front wing, and the head.
Save!
Step 17* Highlight the white tummy layer and add an inner bevel with settings as in step 15*...Select all...float...add a new raster layer...and add the cut out as before but change the shadow colour to black. Deselect and add the Jiggle effect as above.
Save!
Step 18* Highlight the cheek layer and add the Jiggle effect as above. Then with the Retouch tool ...Smudge....very carefully fluff out the edges of the cheeks....using a to and fro motion, bring in a little of the black colour.
Step 19* Finally for the beak...I merged together the mouth and beak layers...then used the Retouch tool...this time using 'Lighten and Darken RGB' for the shading and highlights. See the finished image at the top of this page. Make a copy of this image and merge visible all the layers of your copy....then tube it.
Go back to the original and if you wish, add a baby penguin...a Xmas sign...a tree...or whatever...I can't wait to see what you come up with as I just know it will be good! *s*
Here is my stained glass version....a Christmas ornament.
*Last Note* From the Preset shape that you saved, you can change the size, colour, position of your penguin, to create a colony of them.
Have Fun! and Email if you have any problems!
