How to make a Jewels in just a few easy steps.

This is a fun tutorial for anyone, doesn't need a lot of PSP skills....just a desire to have lots of gems in the treasure chest...once you get started on these, you won't be able to stop and they are great to 'Tube'. ;o)

What you will need.

  • PSP 7      You can download a 30 day trial from here.

  • Eye Candy 3 or 4   (I am using 4 in this tutorial but have made gems with both versions for variety!)

  • Images which you can make your jewels from...you can use any of the samples below.   Right click and save to your folder. Or you can use a gradient or pattern from your PSP program.

How to make your jewels!

In Paint Shop Pro (PSP) open up an image or pattern of your choice .  Water scenes with light reflections make ideal jewels and can be colourised for varied effects…also anything with splashes of white or lightening are good to use)   I am using  water images that a friend in my PSP group kindly let me use…thank you Monte! *s*  Also patterns from my PSP program...amongst other things. ;o)

For this tutorial I am working on the image below, which has a lot of light reflection.  If your chosen image does not have enough light reflection, you can always add a bit of 'sparkle' here and there, before using the EC glass and after if you wish!

Now to start on your first piece of jewelry..    Open up an image …the size depends on how big you want it to be, if it is an extra large image, then resize it down....I usually don't make them bigger than 200 x 200.

The shape of the jewel also depends on whether you are using a square or oblong…try both!!  ‘Select’..’Geometric Select’..’Circle’….as shown in sample.

With your magic wand , select all the area surrounding your coloured circle….Go to 'Selections' and 'Invert'.   Now to 'Effects'...Plugins... EC  4 or 3…play around with the bevel, light settings etc,  until you get the effect you like…Ok ;o)  Here are the ones that I chose.

Cut (Ctrl + X) the selected image (but don't lose it, as we will need it in a tic)…still on the original image…deselect…increase size of image (Image...Resize) 120%...fill with your choice of gold, silver, Blade Pro…or whatever….then paste (Ctrl + V) back your jewel onto this new background……whilst the jewel is still selected, go to Selections…Modify….Expand  by 4 (play around with this number for different jewels)…..Invert….Delete and then Invert again…Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + (Ctrl + V) as new image….It is now ready for tubing.

Expand                                Invert

Delete                        Invert again

                          .

You can then play around with the settings to put these jewels into,…let’s see how creative you can all be!  Be adventurous with presets and the glass settings…or anything else you may come up with, but be sure to share it with us.  *BG*

Here are some examples that I have made to show you what can be achieved.

This one was made from the ‘Frosted Glass’ pattern in the PSP 7 Patterns  folder…I then used Eye Candy 4 Glass and had the Opacity set to 100, which gave it a pearl effect.   For the silver rim I used the ‘Bacteria’ pattern in the same folder.

This one was made from my ‘Multi pattern’ which was made by ‘messing around with the ‘colours bmp’ in the PSP 7 Patterns  folder…I then used Eye Candy 4 Glass and played around with the Opacity until I got this effect. (yeah…I play and mess around a lot!) *s*   Now, for the silver rim I used the ‘Bacteria’ pattern in the same folder.  (that pattern folder is getting a work out, huh?  You can add a sparkle to your jewels if you wish.

For this jewel I chose Monte’s ‘SmallWater1’ and for the rim, ‘Black Ruffles’,

for the second image I also used the ‘Doodlelight’ font with ‘black ruffles’ fill.

For this jewel I chose Monte’s ‘SmallWater2’ and for the rim, Alhambra, (you may need to

reduce the size of the scale on this to suit your taste).

Have Fun! and  Email if you have any problems!
