Disclaimer: The Emily doll was inspired by Ruth Morehead's  art work and I used one of her images as a guide only, to learn vectors and shading in PSP".  After creating my own version of these characters, I was quite pleased with the end result so decided to do a tutorial for educational purposes only. I take no credit whatsoever for Ruth's original artwork!

Here is a cute little doll for you to make and if you are not too exhausted, then perhaps you can also make her playmate, Cuddles, the soft toy kitten, pictured below with Emily Jane.

To do this tutorial you really need to be familiar with PSP 7,   vectors and shading,  but if you are not and would still like to try it ....then go ahead.  Go on, what's stopping you?  LOL  If my memory serves me well it should also be okay to do in PSP 6....just different pathways for various tools...I think!

You will need the following programs to complete this tutorial:

PSP 7
If you haven't got this program but would like to try before you buy, then you can download a trial copy.

Eye Candy 4

I have reduced the size of most of my screen captures between 60 and 75 % to keep the downloading time down.  Your images will, obviously, be bigger than these!

Though this tutorial uses vectors and shading, it is not a lesson for them; rather, it depends on your own skills in this area...well, I am only learning after all, can't go telling you experts how to do things, can I?  Especially if there's an easier way...don't forget to tell me if there is!  LOL

A golden rule to remember is to save your work often...you wouldn't want an 'illegal operation' or computer freeze to delete what you have spent so much time doing.  So have your auto save activated...but I always save my work myself at crucial points that I don't want to lose...well, I have been known to forget..#@$%!  (g)

Okay, are you ready? then away we go!

Open a 500 x 500 transparent image.

with Foreground #5A2929 and Background  #F7BD94

Select  Preset shapes  Ellipse Vector and Antialias checked, line width 1

Draw an oblong shape for the head....it needs to be reasonably big sort of out of proportion to the size of the body. Click on Node Edit and shape the head to the way I have done....I added two more nodes on either side of the bottom  centre node  (coloured red in the diagram...ctrl and click on the line where you want the node to be) ... Convert to Raster...call this 'Head'

Save!

With the head layer active...Select all...float...add a new layer for the shading.

Now we will use the airbrush tool ...alternating between these two colours #F1A273  and #F7B57B and the size of brush between 3 and 10...but the rest of the settings the same...spray around the edges of face and around the eyes and nose...then Effects...Blur...Gaussian Blur 3.60  If you wish, you can blend this shading in a wee bit to get a smoother look......Smudge...these are the settings I used...varying the size of the brush between for different areas (I kept these settings throughout the tutorial, changing only the size when needed).

Save!

Add a layer...

Preset shapes   Ellipse...Vector unchecked...Antialias checked...Line width 1
Foreground #5A2929 and Background white #FFFFFF

Draw a small oblong for the eye.

Add a layer

Preset shapes again, Vector and Antialias unchecked...Line width 1...Foreground null...Background #C69C5A   Draw another circle as shown, fitting it into the eye.

Add a layer

Preset shapes   Foreground null    Background #5A2929    Vector and Antialias unchecked.  Draw another circle and put this on top of the last layer, but not completely covering it (check pic below)   Select All...Float....Effects....Plugins...EC4 Glass and apply this filter with the settings as shown  below..

Add a new layer
Select your draw tool  Antialias checked   Vector unchecked   Freehand Line size 1  Foreground  #5A2929  Background null. Draw a few lashes and apply some eye liner if needed.

Effects....Blur...Gaussian Blur 0.60    Keeping only the eye layers open...merge visible and call this layer  'Eye'.  How predictable is that? LOL

Now apply the Gaussian Blur to this new Eye layer, same setting as previously. Duplicate this layer and then go to Image...Mirror.  Merge these two layers visible.   If you find your lashes too bold then use the   retouch...soften tool to make them feathery looking, but gently does it!....I used size 10

Are you saving? :o)

Make the head layer active ...Select all...Float...add a new layer for the cheeks...with the airbrush  size 10  Foreground #F38071  spray both cheeks and then apply Gaussian Blur 3.60

Preset shapes  ...Ellipse  Foreground #5A2929  Background #F7BD94  Vector and Antialias checked...draw a small oval shape for the nose... node edit ...shape the nose to your preference... or see pic above right. Add a layer and select the draw tool   Freehand Line Width 1...Foreground  #5A2929...Antialias checked.  Vector unchecked.  Draw in the nostrils. Gaussian Blur 1.30. Merge these two layers visible and call 'Nose' Apply an Inner Bevel to the nose layer...with these settings.

Preset shapes Vector and Antialias checked...heart shape (heart 1) Foreground null.. Background #E07A7A make a small shape for mouth...play around with it until you get the shape you want (after I did my shape I used the deformation tool to squeeze it into the shape I wanted).  Convert to Raster Layer.  Add a new layer and with your paintbrush  I made mine size 3 but it depends on how large you made the mouth...make a shape in the centre of the mouth.   Reduce the brush size to 2 and add a small line at each side of the centre shape (this is to taper the mouth crease).  Reduce to size 1 and the same thing again extending the line you have just made. Merge all mouth layers visible....yep, you guessed it.. call it 'Mouth'. ;o)

Save your work!

Add a new layer and with the Draw tool Vector unchecked  Antialias checked  Freehand Line  ..line width 1...Foreground  #D47D48  Make a dimple crease between the cheek and the mouth....Gaussian blur 1.30 and then duplicate this layer and mirror.

Add new layer and keeping the draw tool with the same settings but increase the size to 2, draw an eyebrow then Gaussian blur 1.30 Duplicate this layer and mirror also, or do two separate ones like I did.

Now Merge all layers visible...except Layer 1, call this 'Head'

Use this picture to refer to for placement of dimples, eyebrows, ears and neck.

Save!

Make Layer 1 your active layer and click on Preset shapes   Vector and Antialias checked.. Line width 1...Foreground #F19B5B   Background #F7BD94  Draw a small oval for the ear...this should be behind the head layer. Now rotate it until it is on a slight angle then click on node edit  to change the shape to how you want it. Convert to raster. Add a layer and  spray some dark shading inside the ear shape with the airbrush ...not too much though. Smudge as you did for the face if you wish. Gaussian Blur 1.30  Merge both layers invisible. Give the ear an Inner bevel....with these settings:

She's starting to look good now...at least she will do when she gets some hair. LOL

Add new layer (this is to go under the head layer too)

Presets Shape_ Ellipse...Antialias checked....Vector unchecked... Foreground null Background #F7BD94...make a small oval which will be the neck. With a darker shade, spray a little on the neck, under the chin area.. then smudge lightly to blend...that'll do you for the neck.

Save!

I didn't bother with a body for this doll, seeing as it was going to be covered up anyway...but you can do so if you wish. ;o)  I am going to do a body at a later time so that I can use the doll in different positions...well, that's the plan anyway...but for now, she's a 'no body'. ;o)

Now I think we'll give her some hair...well she is starting to feel a little embarrassed here....wouldn't you?

Add a layer then with your draw tool ...Freehand Line......line width 1...Vector unchecked...Antialias checked....Foreground colour #D9C39D...Background null.

Draw the basic shape of the hair style you want using a light shade...using the lines to represent the strands of hair....change to a darker colour and add more lines...then again with a darker shade but this time using the airbrush , around the hair parting and shaded areas. Use your eraser to get rid of the unwanted areas, I didn't like the long fringe on my first pic so got rid of it.  Gaussian Blur of 1.70 on the finished hair. Smudge these areas to blend in and I also chose to lighten the finished hairdo... Colours...Brightness...Contrast 20..Brightness and 5 Contrast. .

Merge the head, ears, and hair layers and called this layer 'Head'...this should be your top layer.

Save!

This is the pattern that I used...scale of 10. Right click and save to your pattern folder.

Making your Neck layer the active layer, click on Preset shapes...Ellipse....antialias and vector checked...Foreground null...Background a pattern of your choice...or you can use this one if you like....Draw a large oval for the dress...Node Edit and shape the dress to how you want it....this should be between the head and neck layers. Once you have the shape, convert to raster layer.

Add a new layer and spray some dark lines for the folds in the dress (looks messy at this stage but will improve)  Shade in around the waistline also to give a slightly gathered look and then Gaussian Blur 7.70....Retouch tool Smudge , work the creases up from the bottom of the dress towards the waist line...it takes a while to do but gives a nice feeling of depth to the fold.  Then still with the retouch tool, select Lighten RGB...and make some strokes on the top of each fold...you will see the difference this makes to the folds in the dress.  Merge dress & dress shading layers visible.

Save!

Preset shapes...Ellipse...Antialias and Vector checked...Foreground null...Background a pattern of your choice. Make another smaller oval shape and fit it to the dress...you will find this easier if you use the rotate handle to get it to the angle you need before using node edit to get the shape you desire. Convert to Raster.

Add a new layer and with a dark shade, spray around the arm holes, and the sleeve cuffs area, size 2 or use your draw tool to do this size 2...Gaussian Blur 1.70.

Then duplicate this layer and mirror...put it in place on the opposite side. Do the same with the smudge and Lighten tool as you did to the dress.

Merge dress and sleeve layers. Call this 'dress'.

Save!

Preset shapes...Ellipse...Antialias and Vector checked...line width size 1...Foreground #5A2929...Background #F7BD94

Make an oval shape for the hand...rotate to the angle required and then node edit ..once you get the shape you like, convert to raster layer.

Save!

Add a layer and with a darker shade, draw in some lines for finger creases.

Gaussian blur 1.30

Then apply a cut out Vertical 2   Horizontal 2   Opacity 44   Blur 39.3   Shadow colour #D58B5F  OK.  Repeat this but make the vertical and horizontal -2
Merge visible the hands and shading layers.
Duplicate this layer and mirror.. position it on the other side.

Save!

Do the same thing for the feet...(different shaping though...LOL)

Preset shapes...Ellipse...Antialias and Vector checked...line width size 1...Foreground #5A2929...Background #F7BD94

Make an oval shape for the foot... node edit it...once you get the shape you like, Convert to raster layer.

Add a layer and with a dark shade, draw in some lines for toes. Gaussian blur 1.30

Add a layer and spray some cream highlights on the top of the foot...Gaussian Blur again.  Apply a cut out Vertical 2   Horizontal 2   Opacity 44   Blur 39.3   Shadow colour #D58B5F  OK.  Repeat this cut out, but make the vertical and horizontal -2
Merge visible the foot and shading layers.
Duplicate this layer and mirror.. position it on the other side. can't have her hobbling around on one foot, can we?

I added a couple of ribbons in her bunches which I made with my draw tool using the foreground only and then filling each of the spaces with the matching pattern....I'll leave that up to you though, you may have other ideas.  Save!

Merge all the layers visible... Tube your image.

***Extra***

This is optional but you may wish to add a pinafore over the dress...now I didn't take screen shots of the original one as it wasn't part of the tutorial, it was just something I added for the top of the page... but.. since someone has already asked me how I did it, I have tried to duplicate what I did to get the finished result.

The pinafore was made by making an oval shape...adding extra nodes (in red) and shaping to fit over the doll's dress.  I used 3 colours..#F9FAED for the background colour.....the folds  #A69A86 and #F3E6C6.  Gaussian Blur...try the settings to suit your folds...Smudge all the folds and then apply the 'Lighten' tool...in several places between folds.  Play around with this until you are happy with it...I added a bow and ribbon, also lace around the hem and of course the 'heart patch' with a few stitches added.  Have fun!

Want to see some of the work that has been done from this tutorial? They were done by members of a small private group that I am in and also members of Cafe PSP....but if you would like your Doll displayed on the page also, then send it to me with your Url and I will put it on there.
