Disclaimer: The kitten was inspired by Ruth Morehead's  art work and I used one of her images as a guide only , to learn vectors and shading in PSP".  After creating my own version of these characters, I was quite pleased with the end results so decided to do a tutorial for educational purposes only. I take no credit whatsoever for Ruth's original artwork!

This tutorial was written in February 2002 and  © by Lady Oz.  You have my permission to make a copy of this tutorial or print it out for your own personal use ONLY .  If you think that my work is good enough and would like to create a  TEXT LINK to my tutorials, or share them with a group, please let me know.  This tutorial belongs to this site and I wish it to remain here.

What you create from my tutorials belong to you, to do with as you wish....I hold no claim to them...but I would love to see what you create from them. ;o)

Here is a cute soft toy kitten for you to make, her playmate is called Emily Jane. If you haven't already made her then why not pop over to see her...Cuddles will be so pleased! :o) Incidentally, the name 'Cuddles' was chosen by my granddaughter, Chantelle, who came to my rescue when I couldn't make my mind up from the many suggestions made by my lovely friends...Thank you all! ((Hugs))

To do this tutorial you really need to be familiar with PSP 7,   vectors and shading,  but if you are not and would still like to try it ....then go ahead.  Go on, what's stopping you?  LOL  If my memory serves me well it should also be okay to do in PSP 6....just different pathways for various tools...I think!

You will need the following programs to complete this tutorial:

  • PSP 7
If you haven't got this program but would like to try before you buy, then you can download a trial copy.

  • Eye Candy 3 or 4

  • Texturizer    You can use the PSP texturizer or the Adobe if you happen to own one.

I have reduced the size of most of my screen captures between 60 and 75 % to keep the downloading time down.  Your images will, obviously, be bigger than these!

Though this tutorial uses vectors and shading, it is not a lesson for them; rather, it depends on your own skills in this area...well, I am only learning after all, can't go telling you experts how to do things, can I?  Especially if there's an easier way...don't forget to tell me if there is!  LOL

A golden rule to remember is to save your work often...you wouldn't want an 'illegal operation' or computer freeze to delete what you have spent so much time doing.  So have your auto save activated...but I always save my work myself at crucial points that I don't want to lose...well, I have been known to forget..#@$%!  ;o)

Okay, are you ready? then away we go!

Open a 500 x 500 transparent image.

Select Preset shapes  Ellipse Vector and Antialias checked, Line width 1...Foreground #ADA1DB...Background, a pattern of your choice or you can use mine....I reduced this one to a scale of 60.

Draw an oval shape for the head and node edit....shape the head so that it is similar to mine....I added a node between the top and centre right ones and changed it to cusp...the other nodes I just moved around until I got the shape I was happy with.  Convert to Raster Layer.
...call this 'Head'

Save!

Left inner ear...Preset shapes Ellipse Vector and Antialias checked, Line width 1...Foreground #ADA1DB ...Background white, draw an oval shape, then rotate it so that it is on an angle...node edit and shape it like this..

Convert to Raster Layer. Select your ear shape...Selections...Select All...Float...and with your airbrush   Foreground #ADA1DB  Background null. and with the settings below,  spray some inside the ear...see pic above.

Now to give it a textured and set in look...Effects...Plugins....Texturizer.... on these settings....

Next we will give an Inner Bevel..

Now to make it fluffy...Effects....Texture Effects...Fur and these settings

Save!

Right inner ear...Follow the left inner ear steps, only make it a smaller oval and there is no need to rotate this one...when you apply the inner bevel though, change the direction to 272.

Now for the Outer left ear...keeping your inner left ear showing, as a guide for this piece. Preshapes ...Elipse same settings Foreground #ADA1DB...Background pattern...Line Width 1 make a small horizontal oval and move the nodes to fit the inner ear...like so...

 Convert to Raster Layer.

Do the same thing for the right outer ear..but this time make it a vertical oval instead.

Now merge visible all the ears layers and call this new layer, 'Ears'.

Preset shapes Ellipse Vector and Antialias checked, Line width 1...Foreground #ADA1DB ...Background white

Make your head layer active and then draw a large oval for the..muzzle area...node edit shape the right hand side to fit into the shape of the head...

Convert to Raster Layer and call it 'Muzzle'.

Apply the texturizer to the Muzzle layer as you did for the ears...then an inner bevel same settings as before but change the angle to 84 degrees. then add the fur effect. Add a new layer and with your Draw tool Freehand Line...width 2...draw the mouth and nose...or use a preset heart shape for the nose. Gaussian Blur 1.30

Add a Layer and call it 'Eye'

For the eyes...Preset shapes Ellipse Vector unchecked and Antialias checked, Line width 1...Foreground #753F2C ...Background #F6E0CE

Create a small oval shape. Keeping the eye layer active and the eye selected, add a new layer...Preset shapes Ellipse...Vector unchecked and Antialias checked, Foreground null ...Background #D98C4D create a circle at the top of the eye, call this 'Iris'.  Add a new layer...change the background colour to #753F2C but the rest of the settings the same, create an oval to fit the left side of the eye.  Making the Iris layer active and selected, add a new layer...Grab the paint brush size 2... add a little white in the center of the circle...then Gaussian blur 1.00......merge the eye layers together and then duplicate this layer.  Move it over to the other side of the head but  do not mirror it, we want Cuddles looking to the side.

On another layer and with the draw tool size 2 Foreground #5B47A5

Add a couple of eyebrows and use the smudge tool very lightly to give a feathery look to them.

Add a layer and add some whiskers and if you are happy with what you have done so far...then merge all these layers and call it 'Head'

Keeping the Head layer active and selected, add a new layer.

Now grab your draw tool size 1...Freehand line...and using a darker shade foreground #5B47A5...Background null...draw in two lines to represent the seams and around both ears...then if you wish you can add some stitch lines as I have done. Gaussian blur 1.30  Merge these two layers and call it 'Head'  Still on this Head layer and with your draw tool, same settings but change the Foreground colour to #753F2C...add a new layer and add some eyelashes to the left side of one of the eyes...duplicate this layer and move to the other eye..do not mirror...if you prefer, you can Gaussian Blur about 1.00  Merge these three layers visible.

Preset shapes...Ellipse Antialias and Vector checked...Line width 1 foreground #ADA1DB Background...your pattern...draw a large oval for the body...node edit ...add an extra node between the top and center right node and pull this up to meet the Cuddle's neck...pull the lower center node up until flattened on the bottom. Convert to Raster layer and call it 'Body'...put this under the head layer....moving it into position..

Add a new layer and call it 'Tummy'

Preset shapes...Ellipse...Antialias  checked and Vector unchecked....Line width 1 Foreground #ADA1DB...Background white...draw a large egg shape for the tummy...Still on this layer, Selections...Select All ..Float....add the Texturizer....then the fur, as you did for the ears. I added a light spray of my outline shade #ADA1DB in places, before doing the fur...but you may want to keep yours white. ;o)

Now for the tail...can't have a pussy without a tail can you? Well I suppose you can but they look much cuter with one.

Preset shapes...Ellipse...Antialias and Vector checked....Line width 1 Foreground #ADA1DB...Background white...
Same thing as for the tummy...just a smaller oval and then shape it until it resembles a tail...sort of!  :o)

Convert to raster layer and call it 'Tail'...select the tail again...apply the texturizer and fur effect...deselect and go around the edge of the tail with the smudge tool to make it fluffier.

Are you saving? :o)

Preset shapes ...Elipse...Antialias and Vector checked...Linewidth 1...Foreground #ADA1DB Background....your pattern.  Draw an egg shape and with node edit ..shape like this....

Convert to Raster and call it 'Paw'. Select the paw again....add a layer and with your draw tool size 3 make a crease for the elbow and a couple of claws...Gaussian blur 1.0 Merge these two layers and call it 'Paw' Duplicate this layer and mirror...move this to the bottom layer so that you can see how it looks...
Then with your deformation tool make it a bit smaller and rotate it until it is like this..

Merge your the paw layers visible and call this layer 'Paws'

Save your work!

Now for the legs...nearly finished. ;o)

Preset shapes ...Ellipse...Antialias and Vector checked...Line width 1...Foreground #ADA1DB...Background....your pattern.  Draw an oval shape...node edit ..shape like this, adding an extra node where I have placed the red one....

Convert to Raster Layer and call it 'Leg'!

Add a Layer and call it 'Right Foot'
Preset shapes ...Ellipse...Antialias checked and Vector unchecked...Line width 1...Foreground #ADA1DB...Background....your pattern...draw a large egg shape for the foot of the right leg...Selections....Select All...Float.. fit to bottom of right leg... ....apply texturizer...then fur effect as for ears.

Same again for left foot...slightly different shape though.

Save!

Merge all layers visible.

Now your image is ready to tube

Footnote:  I found that I could change the colours of my pattern by going to Colours...Adjust....Hue Map...here are the settings for the one in the picture with Emily Jane...gives you a few more cuddlies!  Enjoy!
